It had been seventeen years... seventeen years of missing you.
I had never, ever expected to see you again, Maya, but I was called upon. And I had to do everything in my power to save you. I succeeded; you may think otherwise, but just because my life was stolen in the process, doesn't mean I regret it. It's the least I could do, after leaving you and Mia all those years ago...
When I first heard that I would see you again, I couldn't help but start crying. I had spent every day and every night wondering about you, about what you looked like, what your voice sounded like... I wondered about everything. And to finally know that I'd be able to see for my myself... It brought a real, genuine smile to my face for the very first time in seventeen years.
No matter how happy that made me, however, I knew that's all I'd be able to find out. There was absolutely no reason for me to reveal my identity to you, only for me to disappear once again once my job was done. Even if I had stayed, it would have been a disaster. How could I explain to you about why I left and never came back? So I stayed quiet, asking you questions silently in my head--what are your favorite foods? favorite movies, tv shows, and music? who are your friends? how is your spiritual training coming along?--all of which I got no answer to.
Now, in the afterlife is where I reside... with Mia. We'll be waiting here for you, Maya, watching. We know you'll do well in everything and anything that you decide to do, and whether you know it or not, we'll be there, guiding you, every step of the way.
